Joel McHale Breathes Live Into The Soup

By Julie Mackay

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a job where all you had to do is poke fun at celebrites and reality television and get paid for it? Actually there is and the witty Joel McHale, funny host of the Soup has it already.

The Soup as it's now called, started out as Talk Soup in 1991 with then host Greg Kinnear. Over the years many different hosts have done the show including Aisha Tyler and John Henson. Joel McHale joined the show in 2004 and after a few tweaks and a name change the show was rescurrected to his former glory days.

There were talks of a few different show names before The Soup was decided on, and was very nearly called the What The? Awards.

The wit and sarcastic jokes that Joel McHale uses on the show has not only captured the fans attention, but also Hollywood has taken notice and he has since been offered a role in the upcoming The Informant movie with Matt Damon, and also the NBC pilot Community with Chevy Chase.

Joel McHale has always said that he came to Hollywood to make movies and his dream is about to come true when The Informant is released in September 2009 which he plays an FBI agent alongside Matt Damon and Scott Bakula.

The Soup has a number of popular segments including Chat Stew, Chicks Man, Reality Show Clip Time, and Lets Take Some E! which focus of different television genres.

The Soup also has many different characters that help make it funny including Mankini, Spaghetti Cat, the Star Wars nerds, Matt the Intern and more recently the Hollywood Douche.

Additionally Lou the Chihuahua is often shown in various segments of the show. Lou belongs to executive producer Edward Boyd, and not McHale as some people assume.

The Soup specials appear regularly as well. Often called The Soup Presents ..., these show some of the funniest television clips of that year that have previously been on the show.

While Joel McHale has said that he has no plans to leave The Soup, with his acting career taking off that will remain to be seen. - 20765
