How NLP techniques work

Many experts claim that NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) can do amazing things, such as cure phobias, change bad habits, develop self confidence and do all this in a very short period of time. That seems hard to believe but if you know how NLP works, youll understand why it is so effective.

To understand how NLP works, we must first know about our subconscious mind. In all of us there is a conscious and subconscious mind. While the conscious mind does all the logical thinking, reasoning and analysis, the subconscious mind controls our emotions, beliefs, habits and creativity.

Because our subconscious mind contains our beliefs, habits, fears and emotions, it literally controls our life. What we think, how we act, and what we do are all the result of the influence of our beliefs, habits and fears " that means whatever that is inside your subconscious.

We cannot consciously decide or dictate what goes into our subconscious mind, which is why we cannot deliberately choose which beliefs, fears or habits to have. Rather it is our past experiences, references and interpretations of events that goes into our subconscious and subsequently creates those beliefs/habits/fears.

Before a thought, idea or message goes into the subconscious mind, the conscious mind will first filter it to ensure that not every single idea or message gets accepted into the subconscious mind. Instead, all thoughts and ideas will be first analyzed by the conscious mind based on past experiences, events and references.

Despite the fact that this conscious filter is meant as a tool to help us simplify our daily lives, it also brings many limitations along with it which ultimately hinders our progress and ability to achieve success. The analytical and logical nature of the conscious mind filter can create many limiting beliefs in us. For example, any past experiences of failures would be interpreted by the conscious mind as an inherent weaknesses or inability.

What we want is to not only have a conscious mind filter that works and helps us survive, but also have control over what goes through and what does not go through the filter. This way, we can deliberately choose to have empowering beliefs and good habits. It is in this area that NLP can help us.

NLP techniques allow us to bypass the conscious mind filter. By enabling us to communicate directly with the subconscious mind, we can literally install beliefs, habits and remove fears just by using the principles and practices of NLP. All limitation imposed by the conscious mind can be avoided.

The feeling I get when using NLP is that I am no longer communicating to my brain in a language it cannot understand.
