Mass Personal Injury Protection Law and Benefit Summary

By Lucille Green

Accidents on the road are a fact of life, not matter how good a driver you are so isn't it a good idea to look after yourself with a personal injury protection plan? Most people also have other responsibilities; those of a financial nature and family members that will need to be provided for. Personal injury protection or PIP may be a part of a larger personal insurance plan or a specific plan in itself. With the growing number of insurance plans on the market, all of which sound necessary, each family has to weigh up the benefits against the additional financial strain that can be imposed by adding it.

It is important to remember the protection should cover everything that is required otherwise it is a waste of time and money. In America personal injury is now a required form of insurance cover in many states although the amount does vary depending where you are in the USA. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. The figures for this show massive variations with people living in Florida on requiring one tenth the amount that citizens in Alaska do. Although there are still some states that have not passed a law on personal injury protection at this time, there is no reason why you should wait until it has before you arrange it.

Depending on the policy, cover can pay up to eighty percent of costs involved for the insured and any passengers they were carrying at the time. With this type of plan it doesn't even matter if the person responsible for the accident was the policy holder because it will pay all medical bills, lost wages etc. This is a good reason why it is worth checking existing insurance plans to see if any of these areas are already protected, which should, in theory, lower any additional plan you take out. By checking carefully you may discover that certain costs like medical bills and other expenses are already part of your current cover.

This means that in certain circumstances, no extra protection is required or if it is, only a small amount. Drivers that have more than their fair share of accidents are more likely to require personal injury protection even though it may cost them more. What many drivers do not realize is that although they may be covered by their own health insurance for medical bills, other passengers, unless they are named on the policy, probably will not be.

Personal injury protection will still be required if you find that other passengers are not covered or the level of cover is so low it is almost a waste of time. Every driver has a responsibility to look after the safety of the passengers they carry in the vehicle. Just because your state does not make it compulsory to have a personal injury protection plan in force, does not mean you should neglect your civic responsibilities towards others.

Younger drivers however, do not fair so well if they are inexperienced with little insurance cover in place but they are often in greater need of good health insurance cover to protect themselves and any family they have. Accidents unfortunately happen but before you rush into buying insurance cover, look into the subject as it could save you some money but more importantly will make you feel more secure when you drive with passengers. - 20765
