Your family is beaming, and your friends are clamoring to setup game watching parties and a viewing of the latest action film. You've finally done it! After months of saving and sacrificing, you took the plunge and purchased that brand new, super high-def, plasma TV. It's impressive, to be sure. But now comes another critical decision, as if the hours of researching the features and benefits of various televisions wasn't enough, you now must decide how best to display it.

You might be thinking about mounting it to the living room wall. But after soberly contemplating that painful task, you decide it might be best to find a good TV stand. But what kind should you buy? Should you go simple and just get something to sit the TV on or go all out and get an entertainment center? Where are you going to put it and will it always stay there? These questions and more must be answered if you are to end up with a television stand that meets your needs for the long run. To that end, I have a short list of the five most important areas to look at when purchasing the stand to go with that uber-awesome TV.

Dimensions

When purchasing a TV stand, you will want to consider the dimensions of the unit before purchase. It is going to take some planning, as you need to decide where you are going to place the television in your home. Set depth is also an important consideration. Can your TV sit comfortably and securely on this stand? Is the stand too large for your TV, making your expensive flat screen look cheap? Also, make sure that your television will sit at eye-level when you are seated in front of it. The height of the stand will affect this.

Price

Next, you are going to want to look at price. TV Stands are not cheap. But with television stands, price doesn't always equal quality. If you purchase a stand from a retail electronics store, you are likely to pay more because they only stock a few models and expect you to buy one there when you purchase your TV. A better option would likely be a furnature store or an online store specializing in just television stands. These places will have more variety, in both look and price, and you will end up happier with the unit you purchase.

Stability

This one can be overlooked by some. You need to determine if your selected stand can hold the weight of your TV. Is it well-supported? Does it look like it will hold your TV for a good while? Get the weight measurements off of the box that your television came in. Match them to the weight specifications of the stand. If you cannot locate them, you would be better off just going with a different stand.

Look

This is obvious and important. You have likely dropped a lot of money on your brand new HDTV, therefore it would be a shame to sit it on a third-generation coffee table. It is important to match the style of the TV to the style of the stand. If you bought a sleek, black Plasma, you might want a stand with a modern look. If however, you are just replacing a stand for an older TV, you may be less concerned. There are various types of stands available, including hanging stands, sliding stands with mounts, and the more common floor-based models. Especially with entertainment centers, some people prefer a TV stand that looks more like an armoire than a media center.

Versatility

And last, think ahead when purchasing a television stand. How are you going to use this TV now and in the future? Will DVD Players, Game Systems, a Computer or a DVR be attached to the TV? What about a stereo or speaker system? Will you need room for picture frames or other display items? It is important to consider all of these possibilities before the purchase so you don't regret your decision several months down the road. - 20765
